Miles Edward Simpson, 87, of Graham, North Carolina, passed away on October 27, 2024 at Alamance Regional Medical Center in Burlington.

Miles was born in Edwardsville, Illinois on July 22, 1937, the son of Lawrence Frances Simpson and Leona Adah Simpson (Morgan). He spent most of his youth in Lansing, Michigan. Miles graduated from Sexton High School in Lansing and received a PhD in Sociology from Michigan State University. In his early career, he taught at Stanford, Texas Tech and Murray State University before joining the faculty of North Carolina Central University in 1981, where he taught until retirement in 2015. A life long educator, Miles was a past editor of the Journal of Applied Gerontology, an active member of Torch Club, and the author of numerous studies addressing income inequality and other important societal issues.

Miles was preceded in death by his wife Joan Simpson (McCauley), his son Miles Jr. and his sister Colette Phillips.

Surviving are his two daughters, Natalie and Tracy Simpson, and his brother Oren Simpson. Miles was an avid reader and an accomplished scholar who was always generous to anyone in need, and he will be missed.
