Caroline Whitson moved to the triangle area to be near her daughter and grandsons in 2013, following a 33-year career in higher education. She began as a professor of English literature, was a provost for six years, and finally served as president of Columbia College in Columbia, SC, for 11 years. Following her retirement, she joined Academic Search, Inc., where she continues to consult with colleges in presidential searches and by mentoring new presidents.
She and her husband, Turner, live on ten acres in the Fox Hill Farm area of Hillsborough with their two dogs, three cats, and three horses. Caroline enjoys hiking, gardening, reading, and traveling. Her retirement project is to achieve competency in French, and she takes an annual trip to France for immersion study.
A past president of Durham-Chapel Hill Torch Club, she has presented programs on the challenges facing private, liberal arts colleges and on Public Broadcasting based on many years of service on both statewide and national PBS boards.
